Uses of Bactrim and Trimethoprim
Primary Use: Lower Urinary Tract Infections
This medication is a combination of two drugs: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim.
Secondary Uses: Lower Urinary Tract Infections
This medication is also used to treat the following conditions:
- Lower Urinary Tract Infections: A urinary tract infection caused by susceptible bacteria in patients over age 60
- Acute Intra-Abdominal Infections (CIN-I): A bacterial infection in the bladder and kidneys
- Chronic Kidney Disease: A condition where the body does not produce enough urine for full urine production
- Intra-Abdominal Inflammation: A condition where the body produces excessive amounts of pain-relieving substances and toxins
- Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP): A bacterial infection that may be present in the lungs and in other parts of the body
- Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia: A form of PCP that causes yellowing of the skin and other blood cells in patients with PCP
- Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia: A severe form of PCP that may cause severe illness in patients who have been treated with antibiotics for bacterial pneumonia
Other Uses
This medication may also be used in the treatment of:
- Acute Respiratory Tract Infections (ARTH): A bacterial infection in the brain
- Tuberculosis: A disease that causes high levels of bacillus, a bacterial protein that is found in many soil and water
- Viral Infections: Viruses in the body causing infections
Drug Interactions
Drug Interactions with Bactrim and Trimethoprim
There are a number of drugs that can affect the way Bactrim and Trimethoprim work and may interact with them. These include:

Method of administration
Bactrim tablets contain the active ingredient sulfamethoxazole. This medicine belongs to the drug class and is used to treat bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and bacterial synergic acid refractory cases.
